ASM Community Privacy Policy

ASM Community is an online professional networking website that connects people through the personal networks they create, (Connections), the Groups they join, and the messages they post on the site.  The Privacy Settings found in My Dashboard / My Account / Privacy Settings is your mechanism to control your exposure to other registered Community users that use the Basic Directory Search and the Advanced Directory Search.  You can choose to be visible to "Everyone" (this can include ASM nonmembers), to "ASM Members", or to "Nobody" (meaning your personal profile is not returned in search results).

In addition to controlling who can see your personal profile page in the community directory search results, you can also selectively withhold your postal information, your email address, and your business telephone number from being displayed on your profile page.

Each time you post content to the Community site (messages, events, blog, comments, etc.) a link to your profile information is included.  Anonymous posting is not available.  

Outside of the Community site, ASM will not share your email address with any third party. Additionally, your Privacy Settings allow you to opt out from promotional email directly from ASM and from postal mailings from organizations that ASM carefully screens.

ASM requires certain information about you such as name, e-mail address and contact information to allow us to identify ASM members from non-members and to notify users of changes or updates.  Members may choose to provide information beyond their required contact information such as scientific specialty and professional background. Providing information beyond what is required at registration is entirely optional, but enables everyone to better identify each other and more effectively connect and interact.  ASM uses this optional information to identify likely interest in other ASM products and services.

Like many other Web sites, ASM Community uses a standard technology called "cookies." Cookies are small pieces of information stored on your hard drive - not on our site.  They can help make the Internet experience quicker and more convenient. ASM uses cookies to allow users to login without entering their ID and password each time they visit the ASM Community. Cookies must be enabled to use the site.

If you use the system to invite someone to join the Community site, you must provide their email address. The system will send an email inviting them to join your personal Connections network. The invitation email will contain both your name and your email address. ASM does not sell these email addresses or use them to transmit any communication other than the invitation and reminders to join your personal Network.

The ASM Community site may contain links to other Web sites. Please be aware that ASM is not responsible for the privacy practices of other sites our users choose to visit. If our users provide any information directly to parties other than ASM, different rules may apply to the use or disclosure of the personal information disclosed. We encourage you to investigate and ask questions before disclosing your personal information to third parties.

Please be aware that whenever you voluntarily disclose personal information online - e.g., contained in message board postings, file uploads, and events - that information becomes public and can be collected and used by others. By posting personal information online in public forums, members may receive unsolicited messages from other parties.

ASM may modify this Privacy Policy by posting changes to this Web page.  Your continued use of the service indicates your acceptance of any change.
